Summer 2026 Newsletter

We are really happy to welcome all of the children back to school for the Summer term. We hope that you had a wonderful time over the Easter break.

Below are some details about the classes and what the children will be learning about this term.

Science

In Science will be learning about a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees.

History and Geography

In Geography we will be studying imaginary and real maps. The children will take part in simple fieldwork and we will use books such as We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and The Storm Whale to link this to our English work. In History this term we will continue to study the lives of more Significant People in the Past, focusing on Neil Armstrong, Mae Jemison, Bernard Harris Jr and Tim Peake.

Art and DT

In Art we will be learning about collage techniques to create a layered surface. Children will also use muted colours to soften an image. They will use lines as well as pattern to suggest something is there. The children will also learn about sculptures. They will explore a range of materials to understand the importance of weight and balance in construction. In Design and Technology children will learn how to sew pieces of fabric together to form a pouch.

Maths

In Maths this term we will be focusing on counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10 and linking this to multiplication and division by grouping and sharing objects. We will look at recognising coins and their values and link this to counting in 2s, 5s and 10s by calculating the total value of coins in a set of 2p, 5p and 10p coins. We will learn to tell the time to the hour, half past the hour and draw hands on a clock face to show these times. We will learn to recognise and say the days of the week and months of the year in order. We will also be recognising halves and quarters of objects, shapes and quantities.

English

In English we will be recounting events from personal experience and from familiar stories by writing a series of sentences to form short narratives using time connectives. We will be writing character descriptions using adjectives to describe a noun. We will be looking at non-fiction and we will be writing a non-chronological report or fact file. We will use capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks appropriately. We will be learning to add the suffix – ing to a root word. We will also be adding the prefix ‘un’ to words and understanding its impact.

We continue to focus heavily on phonics this term and you can support your child in this area by reading their phonic based books at home with them. Children in year one will also have their phonics screen test in early June and we will put practise examples in their bookbags.

We will continue to celebrate the children who read regularly at home by awarding Rainbow Reader certificates and books. Many thanks to parents who are supporting their children by reading regularly with them at home because this is really vital to ensure your child’s continued progress.

P.E

P.E takes place on Wednesdays for both classes. On PE days, pupils must bring the appropriate PE kit. Please ensure that all PE kit is named. Please also ensure children have suitable footwear as, due to health and safety reasons, they will not be able to take part in the lesson without these.

Please ensure children come to school in the correct school uniform, with all items clearly named so they can be returned if misplaced. With the temperatures being so cold, please ensure that all children come into school with a coat.

We also remind families of the importance of punctual school attendance as arriving on time helps children settle quickly into school routines and make the most of their learning.

Forest school will be taking place on Thursday afternoons in this first half of the term.

We look forward to a fun and successful term together.
